Spanish tourists shun Turkey and prefer Morocco

After the multiple attacks that shook Turkey, tourism there took a big hit. It is especially Spanish tourists who particularly shun the country, preferring Morocco, from El Periodico.

Reservations by Spanish travelers to Turkey show a decline of 45% over the year 2016. This data does not take into account the attack that occurred last Saturday night at the Le Reina nightclub in Istanbul. A tragedy which will further damage the Turkish tourist market, predicts Rafael Gallego, president of the Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies (CEAV).

According to him, we will have to wait for the next few months to determine the real impact of this attack, claimed by the Islamic State (IS). The Easter holidays, in April, are usually a very popular time for Spaniards to stay abroad, particularly in Türkiye.

Rafael Gallego also explains that the profile of Spanish visitors who tend to choose Turkey as a vacation destination mainly opt for Morocco as an alternative. Tourism operators in Turkey hope that the curve will reverse: “They are desperate because the Spanish market is very important for them, but has clearly declined,” explains the president of the CEAV. The Spanish government has not issued a “tacit” recommendation not to travel to Turkey, but has advised doing so “with caution”, it further specifies.
