Casablanca: a second Mohammed V airport will be created

Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics, announced last Monday in the House of Representatives that a new airport, called Mohammed V, will be built in Casablanca, opposite the current airport. This new airport will have a capacity of 20 million passengers. The minister specified that this airport will be a hub dedicated to long-haul flights with the aim of connecting all regions of the world. Casablanca will thus become a strategic crossroads for connections between Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Latin America. Kayouh also indicated that the Royal Air Maroc fleet will increase from 50 to 250 aircraft by 2033. In a related context, images circulating on social media a few months ago presented a supposed design of the new Casablanca airport, planned to be completed by 2030, with modern specifications. Last June, the National Airports Office (ONDA) announced the commissioning of the new international transit zone at the current Mohammed V airport in Casablanca. This new transit zone was designed to be more spacious, functional and capable of handling up to 2 million passengers annually, over an area of 5,000 m², or two and a half times the size of the old zone. It includes 11 check-in points for transit passengers, 10 checked baggage screening equipment (EDS – explosives detection system) with an automatic line, 7 magnetic gantries and portable metal detection devices, 3 body scanners, as well as 7 elevators and 8 escalators.
